Bio
Prasanna, a native of Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, a small town, commenced her artistic journey with the Bloomsburg Theater Ensemble (BTE) in 2008, initially as a child actress. Her trajectory with the theater took a pivotal turn when she discovered composition and songwriting, leading her to compose underscoring for productions of Romeo and Juliet (2015) and The Big Friendly Giant (2017).
Discovery of a Louis Armstrong/Ella Fitzgerald CD in her grandfather’s basement ignited a passion for the American Songbook. Prasanna subsequently joined the Bloomsburg University Big Band under the guidance of Dr. Stephan Clickard (2015-2018) and embarked on a tour of Germany and the Czech Republic with the ensemble.
The character “Prasanna” was forged in Philadelphia, where Prasanna earned her Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance from Temple University (class of 2022). During her tenure, she served as the vocalist for Temple University Swingin’ Owls Big Band under the direction of Chris Oatts and immersed herself in the tradition through the mentorship of composer, historian, and activist Ruth Naomi Floyd.
Prasanna pursued her Master of Music at The New School in New York City (class of 2023), where she found guidance from mentor Reggie Workman. She had the privilege of performing at BRIC Jazz Fest 2023 and the Harlem Jazz Museum (2023). In her recent works, Prasanna has integrated her knowledge of the tradition into her compositions, pioneering a novel sound within the singer-songwriter genre.
